The Mexican White Pine

چکیده
The Arnold Arboretum has more than 40 species of pine growing on its grounds from throughout the geographic range of the genus. The Mexican White Pine, Pinus ayacahuite, is particularly intriguing because it is the Arboretum’s southernmost representative of the genus as well as being one of the very few Mexican plants hardy here. The 24-year-old specimen, propagated from seed from the Royal Botanic Garden, Kew, England, is located in the conifer collection in Kent Field. Not only does it demonstrate the remarkable quality of being hardy in the Boston area, but it exhibits outstanding ornamental features as well. Branched to the ground, it is densely pyramidal, with slightly ascending branches in relatively regular whorls. The needles, arranged in groups of five, are about five inches long, glaucous-green and pendent. The tree has been compared to the Himalayan Pine, P. grifrathii, because of its drooping foliage, but exhibits

IR-reflective Opaque Water-based Acrylic Coatings on White Pine Wood Substrates
Two sets of opaque water-based acrylic coatings were prepared with IR-reflective pigments and conventional pigments. The objective of this work was to determine the efficiency of IR-reflective pigments in limiting the heat buildup of opaque coating formulations. Experiments performed on PVC substrates revealed that IR-reflective pigments significantly decreased the temperature increase above ro...

Conservation and preservation of carpet design cartoons requires a scientific con servation plan appropriate for each case study. The research into the carpet designs of Kerman and Isfahan regions was carried out in 2003 in order to gain access to a comprehensive and exact method for their conservation. In this research, besides the differences in the techniques of producing carpet designs...
متن کاملMaintaining the high diversity of pine and oak species in Mexican temperate forests: a new management approach combining functional zoning and ecosystem adaptability
Mexican temperate forests, at the southernmost end of the distribution range of this ecosystem, are the world's centre of diversity of pine and oak, with 55 and 161 species, respectively. Such forests are threatened by land-use change, unsustainable forest management practices, and climate change; these threats reduce their diversity, alter the distribution ranges of species, modify disturbance...
متن کاملSpatial and temporal patterns of eastern white pine regeneration in the northwestern Ohio oak stand
115 Eastern white pine (Pinus strobus L.) was often associated with oaks (Quercus spp.) on upland sites in presettlement forests of the upper Great Lakes region, but widespread logging and subsequent fires in the late 1800s converted these upland sites to fire-tolerant oak forests. Although white pine regeneration is occurring in these second-growth oak forests, white pine regeneration patterns...
